Troubleshooting Guide: Unfreezing Your iPhone Series

Updated: Aug 19

How to Force Restart iPhone (From iPhone 7 to 16 Series)

Sometimes your iPhone may freeze or become unresponsive, and the usual method of turning it off and on won’t work. In these situations, a force restart can help. Think of it like pulling the plug on a computer—it forces the device to shut down and restart, even if the screen is stuck.

For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus

  • Press and hold both the Volume Down and Side (Power) buttons at the same time.

  • Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release.

For iPhone 8 and Newer (Includes iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 & 16 Series)

  1. Quickly press and release the Volume Up button.

  2. Quickly press and release the Volume Down button.

  3. Press and hold the Side (Power) button until the Apple logo appears, then release.

Tip: Timing is crucial. Press and release the volume buttons quickly, then hold the power button until you see the logo.

What to Do Next

If your iPhone still doesn’t respond after a force restart:

  • Make sure it’s connected to a charger and wait a few minutes.

  • If the problem continues, there could be a software or hardware issue. At that point, it’s best to bring your device to a professional repair service like ThrifTech in Welland, serving St. Catharines, Thorold, Fonthill, Niagara Falls, Port Colborne, and Fort Erie.
